JawSpace x Newcastle University
Where Research Meets
Digital Health
JawSpace and Newcastle University have joined forces to build the first digital platform that bridges science, clinical insight, and everyday self-care for people living with TMD.
Some back story
In July 2024, JawSpace became one of Newcastle University’s first spin-in companies, marking a shared commitment to advancing TMD care through science, digital health, and research-driven innovation. Together, we’re building a first-of-its-kind digital platform that empowers individuals with Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) to manage their symptoms through research-backed tools and evidence-informed strategies.
Built on science. Designed for everyday use.
This collaboration brings together Newcastle University’s strengths in TMD research and clinical knowledge with JawSpace’s focus on user-centred design and digital self-management. Every feature in JawSpace—from symptom tracking to guided exercises—is developed with clinical input and informed by current evidence.
Why this matters
People living with TMD often struggle with fragmented care and limited resources between appointments. This partnership addresses that gap, delivering a digital-first approach that supports users day-to-day—not just in the clinic.
By combining clinical research, engineering, and intuitive technology, we’re reimagining how TMD can be understood and managed—making care more accessible, personalised, and informed.
World experts in TMD care and research
Newcastle University is globally recognised for its exceptional expertise in the field of TMD research and effective self-management techniques. The institution has established itself as a leading authority in understanding and addressing TMD, combining innovative research with practical solutions for those affected.

Running the worlds’s largest TMD clinical trial to date
The MiTiGate Trial at Newcastle University studies treatments for chronic myalgia temporomandibular disorder (M-TMD). It compares amitriptyline/gabapentin, Botox, and lidocaine injections in 663 participants. The trial assesses pain relief, quality of life, and cost-effectiveness, with patient involvement and innovative communication methods.
